Our Story

Co-operation Ireland was founded in 1979 with a simple but powerful idea: that getting people to work together across divides can build understanding, respect, and lasting peace.

What started as an effort to promote dialogue between communities in Northern Ireland has grown into one of the island's most respected peacebuilding organizations. Co-operation Ireland operates under the joint patronage of King Charles III and President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, and works with communities, schools, local governments, and civic leaders to address the legacy of conflict and build a shared future.

The work is hands-on. Co-operation Ireland runs programs in neighborhoods that experienced the worst impacts of the conflict, working directly with young people and marginalized communities.
From cross-border education projects to leadership development, the organization creates real opportunities for people to connect, collaborate, and grow.

Co-operation Ireland USA

Co-operation Ireland USA was established in 1981 and is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Based in New York, we serve as the bridge between American supporters and the peacebuilding
work happening across the island of Ireland. Our role is to raise awareness, build a community of supporters, and fund programs that invest in the future of communities still working through the legacy of division. We host events, connect people to the cause, and make it easy to contribute to
work that matters. Under the leadership of Chairman Sean Gaffey, we are entering a new chapter
with renewed energy and a clear focus: connecting a new generation of supporters to a cause that
is as relevant today as it has ever been.

Why It Matters

Peace is not a moment. It is ongoing work. While the 1998 Good Friday Agreement was a landmark achievement, the communities most affected by decades of conflict are still navigating its legacy every day. Young people growing up in these areas need opportunities, mentorship, and connections that help them see a future beyond division.

That is where Co-operation Ireland's programs make the biggest difference, and that is what your support makes possible.
